The company\u2019s rolling mill facility in Itapissuma, northeastern Brazil, has received ASI certification against the Chain of Custody Standard<\/p>\n
S\u00e3o Paulo, December 20, 2021 \u2013 Companhia Brasileira de Alum\u00ednio (CBA) has achieved Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Chain of Custody (CoC) certification for its Itapissuma rolling mill in Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, which it acquired in 2020 to expand its downstream market share in the Americas. The plant, which produces sheet and foil for a wide range of industries, including packaging and automotive, had previously been certified against the ASI Performance Standard in early 2021.<\/p>\n
This comes on the back of previous certification against the ASI Performance and Chain of Custody Standards for CBA\u2019s three mining operations in Minas Gerais and its integrated plant in Alum\u00ednio (SP), from cradle to gate (from alumina to final product, including billets, ingots, sheet, rolled products and anodized and coated extruded profiles), as well as the company\u2019s offices in S\u00e3o Paulo. \u201cWe have been the first company in Brazil to certify our entire production process against the ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standards concurrently, and one of the first aluminum producers in the Americas to achieve double certification from cradle to gate,\u201d noted CBA CEO Ricardo Carvalho. \u201cOur certification at the Itapissuma facility demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and puts us in a more competitive position on the global aluminum market, creating value for the plant\u2019s customers, suppliers, surrounding communities and stakeholders at large, who all benefit from the good practices that have now been recognized by such a prestigious organization as a ASI,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
About the ASI certification process<\/p>\n
The ASI Certification Program, launched in 2017, provides assurance that aluminum producers are operating in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. It is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminum value chain. The independent, third-party audit of CBA was carried out by DNV GL.<\/p>\n
The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminum value chain. The ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard complements the ASI Performance Standard, setting out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors.<\/p>\n
ASI\u2019s standards are applicable to all stages of aluminum production, from bauxite mining to semi-fabrication and downstream users of aluminum. All current ASI members in the \u201cProduction and Transformation\u201d and \u201cIndustrial Users\u201d categories are required to obtain and maintain ASI certification within two years of joining ASI.
